Tour Itinerary

Highlights:

(we will take into account the visitor's preferences when determining the time to spend at one location, below for reference only)

Day 1: We will arrive in Lhasa by plane and check-into a local hotel where we will spend (and it's recommended you do too) the entire afternoon resting and getting accustomed to the high altitude.

Day 2: Our vehicle will take us to Potala Palace, the former residence of the Dalai Lamas (until the 14th DL fled to India) and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The gigantic complex is perched on the side of Marpo Ri Hill in the center of Lhasa Valley, rising 130 meters above ground (at an altitude of 3,700 m!). The chapels, galleries, halls and palaces that make up the huge religious sanctuary house antique holy relics dating all the way back to the times of King Sontsen Gampo (637 AD). Also in the complex is the tomb of the 13th Dalai Lama (built in 1933) with giant stupas, devotional offerings and elaborate murals. You can only access this area in the company of a Potala monk or guide.

We will then head over to Jokhang Temple and view the possibly most venerated statue in Tibetan Buddhism - the Jowo Shakyamuni Statue in the main hall. Other statues include those of two of King Songtsen Gampo's most famous foreign brides. It is worth noting that even though many of the less signifant statues have been severely damaged during the Cultural Revolution, the current "re-makes" include fragments of the original pieces to appear as authentic as possible.

Barkhor Street is right outside, vendors of religious icons/relics and Tibetan handicrafts sell their wares at a reasonable price, but no one is stopping you from bargaining at a holy place.

Day 3: First thing in the morning we will take the vehicle and visit Drepung Monastery, one of the great three "Gelukpa" university monasteries in Tibet. Founded in 1416, the monastery once housed over 15,000 celibate monks (before 1959) engaged in active academic studies making it "the" definitive monastic university in Tibet. Nowadays the academic tradition has largedly dissipated and resident population down to several hundreds, but the remaining scriptures on display may grant you a tiny glimpse into that past.

We will continue on to the second of the "great three" - Sera Monastery. Founded in 1419 and like the other two "greats", the monastery had three colleges specializing in different areas. Its structures badly damaged in the Cultural Revolution, the temple has seen renewed interest in reconstruction in recent years and currently houses several hundred monks.

Our last stop of the day will be at Norbulingka, the summer palace of the Dalai Lamas. The gardens are of typical Tibetan fashion, complete with pools, fountains and are popular venues for the locals to celebrate festivals. The Kalsang Potang has a fully restored throne room (of the Dalai Lamas) and deserves a visit.

Day 4: After breakfast we will leave for the airport to catch the departure flight.

- 3 nights stay, meals included.
