Highlights:

(we will take into account the visitor's preferences when determining the time to spend at one location, below for reference only)

After pick up from your hotel or accomodation we will spend the first half day visiting the Jinci Temple. Don't let its unassuming name fool you, Jinci is one of the most memorable temples you will find in Northern China. Historical significances notwithstanding (its founding date can be traced back to the western zhou - some 3000 years ago, impressive even in China), Jinci has been a favorite of the vacationing emperors and wandering poets - here you will see steles with the handwritings of various emperors (including Taizong, the founder of Tang) and poets whose works every self-respecting Chinese can recite. And unlike many temples that "existed" in certain dynasties but only contains artifacts from the Ming and Qing, here Tang and Song influences dominate. The Figures of Maidservants, Saint Mother's Hall, Offering Hall just to name a few.

After a lunch dining on delicious local cuisine, we will head to the Qiao Courtyard. Though pales in comparison to Jinci Temple in age (built in the 1700s), the Courtyard is every bit deserving a full afternoon's visit for the film enthusiast, for it was the main filming site for the award-winning movie "Raise the Red Lantern" (Zhang Yimou).
As a sidenote though, the original occupants of the estate were merchants and bankers of the most conservative (i.e. moneysparing) type and rarely lighted the lanterns except on really important occasions. The lanterns you will see hanging at nearly every corner of the complex are left over from the actual filming process.
Never cared much for movies? Despair not. The courtyard can be as popular as it is now on architectural merits alone. Tall walls enclose the compound which are divided neatly into yards. Connected by footpaths, the yards are further separated into gardens, halls, rarely wasting any available space.

The second day will take us to Pingyao Ancient City, a city as old as the land of Three Jins itself. It is one of the extremely rare "authentically" ancient cities that can truly live up to its claim of antiquity. More than 300 sites in and around the city have ancient ruins, and inside the city itself close to 4,000 buildings are certified Ming, Qing products. It became a major financial center in the 18 hundreds and was home to the first Chinese bank "Rishengchang". During that period, more than 20 banking/financial institutions' headquarters are based here (half of the total of the entire country at the time). However, most of the local people seem to be unfazed by/unaware of the brief interlude of mercantile significance, perhaps due to the sheer amount of memories that is associated with this 2,000+ city.
