Highlights:

So you've been to Zhouzhuang and Tongli, and think South China is populated with nothing but watertowns. Well, think again. This trip will take us to Shexian, one of the many ancient villages at the foot of Huangshan. No water canals to be found here, the entirely land-based village (though several clear streams do embellish the landscape) is a cultural goldmine - Ming Qing (and even Song) era residences and clan halls and, of course, the Paifangs. Originally a signpost of sorts delineating the boundaries of a town/village, the Paifangs have gradually become purely decorative architectural constructs with elaborate wooden/stone carvings on the beams and commemorative proses (if any) inscribed at the top "board" area. And when the locals call Shexian the home of Paifangs, they don't just mean the meager dozen or so in front of the village but literally "thousands" of arches, both big and small, scattered across the entire county - makes you wonder if the ancients had a case of OCPBS (obssesive-compulsive paifang-building syndrome).

And don't hesitate to shelve out some cash for the locally produced inkslabs if you happend to see them on sale - the She Inklabs are among some of the best in the entire country.
